An update

Apparently Owen was feeling leaving out of being sick last night because he woke up around 11:30. Matt went to be with him and hold him. After awhile Matt took him outside for the cool wet air that tends to help with croup (the humidifier was on, but something different). After several minutes Matt brought him in and then around 1:15 Owen had a febrile seizure. As all of you know, Caroline has had a few, so tried really hard to not freak out (Matt started yelling for me and came running in the bedroom with Owen and asked if he was having a seizure). Timed it and after another minute it stopped. Took temp. Nothing. Started to get really scared. Took again after a couple minutes. 100.2. Took again a few minutes later 102.4. Not as scared, but he is still shivering and having trouble breathing. Matt took him to the ER. They ended up giving him some oral steriods, the nasal tent breathing treatment and chest xrays. No pneumonia. They got home right at 6:30.

Caroline went for some follow up blood work today and the numbers are basically the same. Since they are not getting worse she is going to stay home, but we will be talking to the doctors tomorrow and if the same going in for more blood work Monday (if worse tomorrow). The doctor said she was surprised at how healthy Caroline seemed because she is really sick. That made me want to cry. They are going to continue to closely monitor her until she is completely better though. They really think it is mono with some kind of hepatitis. Right now they are just trying to figure out how the hepatitis is working into it.

Looking for some humor in all this, we did have a very House moment yesterday morning at the doctors. When they were doing the initial finger prick she was crying while they were gathering the blood in the little thing and we both looked up at the same time and she had just a little bit of blood coming out of her nose. I told the nurse that had never happened to her before (she said it was normal and so did the doctor). Just reminded me of when they are doing one test or treatment and right as they start something happens and they are all "no, stop. That can't be right. " Oh, and Caroline's doctor did say she is her current medical mystery. Double oh, we actually got the pediatrician on call cell phone number so we could call her direct with any questions or changes. WOW! They must be really sick.
